What do you do when you want to write and nothing will come out? I’m been sitting here for over an hour staring at the computer, playing solitaire off and on hoping for inspiration to strike me from – somewhere – I don’t know. Maybe if I knew, then the words and thoughts would start to flow. There are so many things I want to say but for some reason, no cognitive thought let alone creative thought has come to me.
It’s enough to make me crazy. How do I progress and improve as a writer if I can’t get past this huge wall in front of me?
One thing that I like to do is to just write something…anything really. The word FUCK one hundred times on the first page. A story about a dolphin. What really matters is writing SOMETHING. The more writing you do (about anything) the easier it gets. There are also heaps of web sites with writing prompts, and one of my favourites is
http://www.terribleminds.com
There’s a huge community of contributors on there and every week there’s a flash fiction challenge. Other ideas that help me are listening to stranger’s conversations, moving outside (or inside), having a beer…just change your situation and you’ll start writing.
Thanks for the ideas and the advice. It’s nice to know that others have the same problem.
